Name of Assignment: Socratic Seminar Subject: Humanities 12 (Global Issues and Research Writing Facilitator/Teacher: Ms. Terry
Description of Work/Assignment:
This task was to share our opinions with our classmates in a group of about 7 or so. Each person was to fill out a sheet to put the claim that the students had, the supporting evidence of the claim, and any developing questions. The students in the group have to keep the conversation about the claim going for the full 8 minutes. We are graded on how much we talk and cooperate in the discussion in the full 8 minutes. This socratic seminar, each student was required to do two out of the three claims. One of the claims was required to focus on what we have been covering in class. I talked about how foraging has greater benefits than those of farming, but the act of both can strengthen a society. Foraging has benefits such as more exercise and nutritional benefits.
Which 21st Century Skill do you feel this assignment addresses, and why?
The interpersonal 21st century skill l used was interpersonal skills. I talked with a group of people while we all discussed topics together. We all talked about our opinions and claims that we made, the reasoning and also our opinions about peoples claims. At the end of the session, we were required to fill out a reflection worksheet which was on the back of the preparatory worksheet.
What are you most proud of from this assignment, and why?
I am most proud of myself for talking and collaborating with the group that I had. I thought I did pretty good, but according to the rubric there was room for improvement which isn’t a bad thing. I thought I was a leader at times and left room for others to talk about their ideas. I wasn’t the only person talking.
What was most difficult about completing this task?
There wasn’t really a difficult part of the task. If I had to choose one, I would say coming up with a claim, but that wasn’t really difficult to me. The next difficult thing might be to keep the conversation going, although this socratic seminar was pretty chill. The group talked about interesting topics which made it easier.
How could you improve this work?
I could improve this work by doing more prep work on the prep worksheet. The rubric after I got graded said that I could have done better preparatory work. I didn’t use any of my claims during the discussion because of other people's claims, but it still showed my thoughts on the paper.
If you could start over, what would you do differently?
If I could start over I would add more supportive evidence to my preparatory worksheet. This is what I got marked off on as I mentioned earlier. I would add more statistical evidence with numbers to help back it up and show why my opinion looks like it is legit.
