Name of Assignment: Marine BERL Project Subject: Marine Sciences Facilitator/Teacher: Mr. Adam
Description of Work/Assignment:
In the 24 person Marine Science class, Mr. Adam agreed to have us do a course in quarter four made by UH College Maui. It is called Building Environmental Resiliency Leaders (BERL) but he is doing a more marine based version. The course focuses on climate change and the ways we can make our community resilient to its environmental impacts. You can either work i n a group up to 4 or gp solo. Each person/group needs to design or research a way with the help of a community member that is a solution to the impact of choice.
Which 21st Century Skill do you feel this assignment addresses, and why?
This assignment addresses the interpersonal skill because as a group we needed to all agree on a environmental impact and solution that is rigorous. We all had to give our ideas of what we thought was a good idea and would all be interested in.
What are you most proud of from this assignment, and why?
I do know that ultimately its a group effort, but I am most proud of the fact that I came up with the idea of the impact and solution we're doing. We're focusing on protecting the ocean and what goes in it from storm drains, so we are making a filtration system for trash and bigger logs so they don't clog the drains or go into the ocean.
How did you develop and/or improve upon your 21st Century Skill with this assignment?
I improved on this skill by using it and by being in a group. I practiced it yet another time by being in a group. Everytime I'm in a group and we all have to agree on something, I am improving in this skill.
What was most difficult about completing this task?
The most difficult part so far is finding the solution to the problem. We still need to find the most effective way that we can implement a filtration system in storm drains.
How could you improve this work? If you could start over, what would you do differently?
I can improve this work so far by communicating with my group members better on what exactly we are doing and possibly draw out what my thoughts are on the solution. We could all draw out our ideas and what we think would be the most logical solution to our solution.
How does this relate to what you have learned in the past?
This relates to when I did this course in ninth grade when I was in biology, It wasn't more focused on biology however, we just did the normal course.
How can you apply this to future learning?
I can apply this to future learning because we have a chance of working with an engineer to help us design the storm drain. I'll be able to also use the skill of working with a group on an engineering project.
